Riga Technical University (RTU), based in Latvia, is a leader in advancing sustainable textile solutions. With expertise in chemistry, materials science, and engineering, RTU plays a vital role in the CELLFIL project. As the lead beneficiary of Work Package 4 (WP4), RTU drives the design, development, and validation of Lyocell filament (LF) yarns and fabrics for diverse textile applications.
Their cutting-edge research and focus on sustainable production are key to the project’s goal of creating circular textile solutions across industries, from performance wear to automotive textiles.
Partner Spotlight: Nordfels
Nordfels, an integral part of the CELLFIL project. Based in Austria, Nordfels is advancing the industrial-scale production of innovative yarns, a crucial step in achieving competitive pricing across the textile value chain. With extensive expertise in mechanical engineering and production process optimization, Nordfels brings significant value to the CELLFIL consortium.
Their high-tech services and experience in constructing complex production systems across various industries—including automotive and industrial sectors—make them a key asset in driving the success of CELLFIL.
Partner Spotlight: Continental Industry
ContiTech, a subsidiary of Continental AG, is a leader in sustainable solutions for technical textiles. As one of three “end user” partners in CELLFIL, ContiTech uses its advanced R&D facilities to develop and test prototypes like industrial hoses, printing blankets, and artificial leather made from sustainable Lyocell filament (LF) yarn.
Through CELLFIL, ContiTech aims to accelerate the circular economy, reduce reliance on fossil-based materials, and achieve 100% closed resource cycles by 2050. Their collaboration with adidas includes designing a prototype shoe using sustainable artificial leather.
Partner Spotlight: Aalto University
Aalto University, an academic partner in CELLFIL, is advancing sustainable textiles in line with the EU’s circular economy strategy. Aalto plays a leading role in defining the framework conditions essential for the sustainable, economic, and safe upscaling of Lyocell Filament Yarn (LFY) production in Europe. The university collaborates with partners to study market,
social, and regulatory factors for successful textile launches.
Aalto also explores consumer behavior, production life cycles, and social impacts to reduce CO2 footprints and enhance sustainability in performance apparel, automotive textiles, and technical products, driving circular textile solutions.
Partner Spotlight: Hochschule Niederrhein
Located in Mönchengladbach, Germany, Hochschule Niederrhein is a leader in textile engineering and research, with a focus on sustainable innovation. Their Textile and Clothing Technology Faculty and Research Institute (FTB) are at the forefront of textile development, working with industry leaders to advance technologies.
In CELLFIL, HSNR is leading lab-scale testing of Lyocell Filament, exploring new yarn combinations, and developing high-performance fabrics. Their work spans weaving, knitting, dyeing, and functionalization, with the goal of creating sustainable textiles for everything from outerwear to technical fabrics.
Partner Spotlight: adidas
Headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany, adidas is a global leader in sportswear, designing footwear, apparel, and accessories. As one of three “end user” partners in CELLFIL, adidas is helping scale circular textile solutions.
In CELLFIL project, adidas will create prototype footwear and apparel using cellulose lyocell filaments developed by CELLFIL. These prototypes will help adidas assess the material’s performance in high-demand sportswear and integrate it into their product lines, furthering their sustainability goals.
Partner Spotlight: MARTUR Fompak International
MARTUR Fompak International is a first-tier supplier and solution partner specializing in automotive seating and interior systems. With extensive experience in producing automotive textiles and a global manufacturing network, MARTUR will produce fabrics for vehicle interior parts like seats, headrests, armrests, and door panels.
As a key partner in CELLFIL, MARTUR will scale-up the production of bio-based materials and fabrics developed within the project for electric and hybrid vehicles.
This collaboration aims to replace traditional polyester and polyurethane with cellulosic, biodegradable alternatives, significantly reducing microplastic waste.
Partner Spotlight: Quantis
Quantis is a leading environmental sustainability consultancy that partners with major organizations across the globe to drive sustainable transformation and align businesses with planetary boundaries. With over 15 years of expertise, Quantis is a leader in assessing environmental impacts and driving systematic change.
As a key partner in CELLFIL, Quantis is leading the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to understand and quantify the environmental performance of Lyocell filament-based textiles as applied in three end-user product groups, from production processes to end-of-life.
The insights generated by this LCA will be essential for scaling up Lyocell filament production by ensuring that the technology is both sustainable and commercially viable, driving greater industry adoption.
