Impact

CELLFIL addresses Horizon Europe’s priority of advancing sustainable, circular, and low‑impact textile production by developing biodegradable, bio‑based Lyocell filaments that replace fossil‑based synthetic fibers and reduce the environmental burden of non‑renewable materials. The project directly contributes to Europe’s transition toward climate‑neutral, resource‑efficient, and circular manufacturing systems by optimizing the entire textile value chain and validating high‑performance applications that support large-scale adoption.

The project supports the creation of sustainable, resilient, and low‑impact textile systems. This shift helps reduce landfill waste, ocean pollution, and fossil‑fuel dependency while strengthening circularity and recyclability across textile applications. Through optimized production routes, enhanced functionalization, and validated prototypes, CELLFIL enables a next‑generation textile system that minimizes resource consumption, lowers environmental pressure, and meets growing regulatory and consumer demand for sustainable materials.

CELLFIL contributes to innovative and competitive European industrial ecosystems by fostering cross‑value‑chain collaboration, empowering SMEs, and driving new business models based on circular, high‑value biobased materials. By demonstrating nine end‑use applications across performance wear, automotive textiles, and technical textiles, the project strengthens Europe’s capacity to innovate, scale sustainable technologies, and secure economic opportunities in a rapidly evolving global market. The project’s socio‑economic assessments and evidence‑based pathways support the creation of fair, future‑proof industrial structures that benefit the environment, industry, and communities alike.
